Before curing a disease, it is good to first admit its existence. This is exactly the way things are now with so-called sexogolism, at least in most countries. Even where science, including medicine, is developing rapidly. Let’s try to understand together whether it is worth doing a general problem of irrepressible sexual appetite.
Specialists divide sexaholism, hypersexuality, and a high sexual constitution (if you don’t know what it means, you need some Ukrainian women dating experience). The difference between the second and the third phenomenon from the first is that it is due not to mental processes, but to pure physiology – the work of the hypothalamus and other genetic changes, which, moreover, do not necessarily lead to problems in one’s personal life. And they are found exclusively in men; in women, intemperance in sexual relations is a purely psychological phenomenon and is caused, as a rule, by serious stress due to failures on the love front.
Sexogolism: is it a Problem or Just a Work of Our Psyche?
It is very important to understand that this diagnosis is almost illegitimate. In other words, Tiger Woods and David Duchovny, who tried to get rid of the habit of constantly cheating their wives, were not registered in the psychoneurological dispensary as patients, for example, with bipolar disorder. That is, there are no (or has not yet been revealed) hereditary sexaholics, an irresistible urge to satisfy erotic needs is not fixed in the medical record, and therefore, a conditional Hollywood producer, or some kind of politician that cannot pass by the secretary without pinched her ass, will not be able to get a discount on a serious mental state.
Working on this material, we turned to a specialist for advice. In a conversation with a psychologist-psychotherapist, doing his business for more than 25 years, we found out that in his entire career only 7 people turned to him for help in combating sexogolism. In his opinion, the reason is that in the public consciousness this problem should be addressed more likely to sex therapists who solve the problems by medicinal means. This is a great omission – hundreds of people, considering themselves sick of some terrible disease, remained unaware of their health, and some even aggravated their mental and physical condition.
The mechanics of dependence here are exactly the same as in the case of alcoholics, drug addicts and, for example, workaholics. “The point is that a person tries to enjoy not at the expense of psychological and spiritual processes, but with the help of material objects. These can be food, alcohol, sex, computer – anything. ” The psychologist assures that such an existence strategy leads exclusively to degradation. This does not mean that material objects are destructive sources of pleasure. This means that fixation on them is a kind of psychological pathology that can appear due to a variety of reasons. But sexogolism cannot be called a full-fledged disease in the classical sense of the word.
Increased testosterone and genetic changes, such as an increase in the number of male chromosomes in DNA, can cause addiction. However, the human being still always has the choice of behavior strategies, and therefore, is responsible for their actions. In conclusion, the doctor notes that drugs that slow down spermatogenesis (production of sex hormones), which are traditionally prescribed by sex therapists, are not particularly helpful here. “After some time the problem will return because the dependence is caused by psychological problems and it is necessary to solve them appropriately.”
Sexologists in the profile of work indicate impotence and decreased libido.
Psychologists and psychotherapists of a broader profile, in turn, specialize mainly in traditional types of addiction – alcoholism and drug addiction (especially progressive add to them also ludomania – addiction to gambling). However, sexaholism is also often included in their competence, as this is a psychological condition, not a disease.
