Now I really trust my country and believe us to be one of the most corrupt nations in the world but this occurrence in Liberia is something even we have to stand up and applaud.
Shipping containers carrying $104m in Liberian bank notes have gone missing from Liberia’s port, apparently ‘shocking’ government officials.
The notes were ordered by Liberia’s Central Bank for printing from China and Sweden but after arriving in the country, ‘mysteriously’ went missing, to the chagrin of George Weah’s government.
The government of the former World Footballer of the Year, who now runs the troubled West African nation, blame officials of the former Ellen Johnson Sirleaf government for the loss.
The bank notes were ordered by the previous government in 2016.
However, the former leader denied the accusation with a stinging rebuke.
“It is most unfortunate that the GOL (government of Liberia) would give false information that wickedly impugns the reputation of past officials and by extension the country itself,” she said.
The missing sum, 104m Liberian dollars, is equivalent to 5% of the country’s entire GDP.
An investigation has been launched, and some officials of the former government have been barred from travelling outside the country.
The containers arrived in November last year, when the previous government were still in charge, but leaked documents show they were cleared earlier this year, after Weah’s government assumed office.
