Kwesi Appiah’s Depleted Black Stars Team Beaten 1-0 In Kenya

The Black Stars of Ghana suffered a shock one goal defeat to the Harambee Stars of Kenya in a 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifier in Nairobi, Kenya.

An own goal just before halftime by Nicholas Opoku gave the Kenyans an historic win against a lethargic Black Stars side.

Kwesi Appiah named a squad for this game which was missing Ghana’s two most talismanic players in the last decade; captain Asamoah Gyan and his vice Andre ‘Dede’ Ayew.

Andre’s brother Jordan was also left out of the squad, whilst Kwadwo Asamoah made his return from exile but started from the bench.

Ghana nevertheless had a strong starting lineup including veterans Christian Atsu, Afriyie Acquah and new kid on the block Thomas Partey.

However, the Stars completely failed to impose their game on the Kenyans, who had lost their opening day encounter against Sierra Leone.

A dull game shot to life just before half time as defender Nicholas Opoku, in a haste to clear a cross, deflected the ball into the Ghanaian net past goalkeeper Richard Ofori.

Kwesi Appiah rang the changes in the second half, including throwing on Kwadwo Asamoah, as the Black Stars sought for the equalizer, but it was in vain as the Kenyans held on for the victory.

Ghana remain top of the group with three points from two games; but could lose the spot depending on the results in the Ethiopia-Sierra Leone tie.
