A 9 year old kid in the United States in Denver, Colorado, has committed suicide after being bullied by his classmates for being gay.
Jamel Myles, a student at the Joe Shoemaker Elementary School, committed suicide last Thursday after four straight days of enduring bullying at his school.
His mum, Leia Pierce said he had told her about being gay over the summer and had been excited about going to school and telling all his friends.
However, they didn’t receive the news as he had expected and they bullied and teased him for four straight days until he could take the bullying no more.
“He went to school and said he was gonna tell people he’s gay because he’s proud of himself,” Pierce told local media in Denver..
“Four days is all it took at school. I could just imagine what they said to him.
“Those bullies are the reason my son’s not with me. My daughter told me he came home and told her, kids at school were telling him to kill himself. I’m just sad he didn’t come to me.”
Pierce added that her son was “the kindest, most gentlest soul I’ve ever met.”
“We have to stop bullying and teach people it’s OK to love each other. We have to stop hating each other for differences, differences that make us equal and unique.” she added.
Often treating others who are different like garbage might seem appealing, but we should know actions have consequences and that being different does not make someone a bad person.
The bullying this kid received is the same kind of bullying some gays receive in Ghana which sometimes descends into physical violence.
Actions have consequences, and sometimes words can cut even deeper than a slap.
