An old video of a sermon by Mensa Otabil probably explains why he managed to preside over the collapse of Capital Bank in such a nonchalant fashion and later remains remorseless over everything he’s done.
In the video, Otabil brags to his congregation that he knows nothing about banking but has been appointed board chairman of a bank.
According to him, when he joined he was so nervous but then he found out that that managing money is so easy — so easy to chop we guess.
“I didn’t have banking training but I am a chairman of a bank. And umm, I was intimidated the first time, I was like wow, what am I going to do, I’m just going to make a mess of myself but you know money is soo easy to understand, just find out where it is going and where it is coming from and that’s it,” he said.
“It’s not that hard, If I could do it and I was horrible with mathematics and still horrible with mathematics, but I realised that in finance, you don’t need serious mathematics, it’s just addition and subtractions, that’s all” he added.
In the end, it turned out his lack of credentials where really important as he presided over the embezzlement of Ghc 610m of taxpayer money meant to bail out the bank after they had ran it into the ground.
At least, we know God is good.
