A lot of well respected Ghanaian actors and actresses’ voices were heard when the new name for Ghana Movies, “Gollywood” was introduced.
The renaming was announced at the Accra International Conference Centre during the 2nd Edition of the G@60 Years on Film Summit on the 12th of July 2018.
As a result of the renaming, a lot of prominent Ghanaians have bashed and described the President of the Film Directors Guild of Ghana (FDGG), Richard Mensah as a leader without consultation skills and an autocratic leader who does things without seeking ideas from his members.
An action to avoid further backlashes from “angry Ghanaians”, the President and his team have retreated the name given to the Ghana Movie Industry when they were called to a live interview on Zylofon FM.

Even after retreating the name, angry Ghanaians continued to splash hot words on them tagging FDGG’s President and his team as cowards.
But according to an executive member of the guild, Mr Haruna Seidu Soale, the leaders of the guild retracted the name (Gollywood) not because of fear.
He told Sammy Flex, the host of Zylofon FM’s “Showbiz Agenda” that Ghana movie industry has no identity in the international level.
“Our industry has no identity. When you travel to other countries, our movies are tagged as Nollywood movies.”
