The French national team brushed aside South American powerhouses Uruguay in the first 2018 world cup quarter finals to become the first side to reach the semi finals of the competition.
Raphael Varane and Antoine Griezmann scored in either half to guide their team to a comfortable win over a Cavani-less Uruguay.
Uruguay impressively brushed aside Portugal in the Round of 16 and put up an impressive fight against a hugely talented French side, but eventually the gulf in class showed and the French strolled through the second half.
The game started with both sides being cautious and chances being few and far between.
France put themselves in the driver’s seat just before half time as Varane rose highest to head in a free kick.
Griezmann wrapped up the game in the 61st minute on the back of a howler from hugely experienced Uruguay goalie Muslera, who fluffed a long range shot into his net.
France thus go on to the semi finals and would meet the winner of tonight’s blockbuster between Brazil and Belgium.
