Lionel Messi was handed a football lesson tonight by Croatia as they dumped three goals past Argentina in the second round of group games of the 2018 World Cup.
Ante Rebic, Luca Modric and Ivan Rakitic all scored to give the European side a comprehensive victory over Argentina who were pitiful throughout 90 minutes.
Argentina, having failed to beat Iceland in the first group game, needed a positive result to keep their campaign on track but failed woefully.
Despite Messi’s best efforts, his supporting cast once again failed him woefully as he had numerous players on him every time he got the ball.
Goalkeeper Willy Caballero set Argentina down their gloomy part when he committed a howler on 53 minutes, clearing the ball to Rebic who slammed it emphatically into the net.
From then it was all downhill as Modric scored a screamer with 10 minutes left and Messi’s Barcelona teammate Rakitic sealed the win in injury time.
The win means Argentina’s fate are out of their hands and all they can hope for is a draw tomorrow when Nigeria meet Iceland and hope to beat Nigeria in their final group game.
