The Pharaohs of Egypt opened their 2018 World Cup adventure with a nail biting loss to Uruguay, who scored with virtually the last kick of the game.
With Mo Salah on the bench, Egypt managed to trouble Uruguay on key occasions, but eventually fell short.
Carlos Sanchez whipped in a free kick which was met by Jose Gimenez in the 90th minute, breaking Egyptian and African hearts.
Injury to Salah in the Champions League final made him a doubt for this game, and despite confidence from the Egyptian manager that Salah would be ready he was only fit for the subs bench for the game.
Uruguay fielded their deadly duo of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, but both failed to particularly impact the game.
Egypt held their own despite Salah’s absence, creating numerous opportunities, particularly on the break.
They failed to cut Uruguay open particularly well, and on the opposite end Suarez failed to impose himself on the game.
Everything looked destined for a goalless draw which would have suited both sides fine, but Gimenez had other ideas and sent the Pharaohs home empty handed.
