Moesha is trending, and some say it’s for the wrong reason while others claim it’s for saying the hard truth, unfettered by political correctness to the face of hypocritical Ghanaians.
One of my Ghanaian friends in Amsterdam, Abena Ayiwa is completely livid that Moesha had the audacity to state that Ghanaian women have to sleep with people’s husbands before they can even rent a decent apartment.
To Abena and the many who are displeased by Moesha’s CNN debut comments, Moesha is a whore, alone one who is generalizing her whorish lifestyle as that lived by if not all, a majority of Ghanaian women.
But Kwame Aplus and the others who have spoken to me this morning are shocked that the Ghanaian social media landscape has descended on Moesha—for stating a fact.
According to this set of people, it’s hypocritical for anyone who is in touch with the lifestyle Ghanaian women, especially those in their mid 20s and 30s living at some of the most expensive places in Accra to claim that what Moesha said is not true.
For me, I am not shocked by Moesha’s assertion. I have written a lot of articles highlighting the fact a lot of our female Ghanaian Celebrities are living lavishly in the pockets of rich married men—offering sex to these men.
And I believe we all know at least one young Ghanaian woman whose fabulous lifestyle is being financed by a certain married man. This has somewhat become a social norm in Ghana, accepted by some families even.
My problem with Moesha who started as an Instagram semi-nudist and seems to have graduated to become a full time “prostitute” is not her generalization of what some people claim to be activities of some isolated few, but how she was able to smugly state on CNN that she is trading her body for money—from a married man.
Perhaps, people are angry not simply because of what she said. Because you cannot honestly argue that there’s no iota of truth in her claim. It seems people are fuming for how she said it—without shame and also making it seems there is a consensus in Ghana on this as a way of life.
Moesha is an internet whore and she has more than necessary times told us this. For her, her body is her only asset, which she trades for those interested in her humongous hips for money.
She’s a blunt truth sayer, to some extent.
But what’s more defining is that, she is an unashamed whore who just justified the actions of her type so loudly on CNN that it robs the large number of decent Ghanaian women who are busting their butts to make earns meet.
Moesha said the truth: she is sleeping with a married man for money and a lot of young Ghanaian women do that too. But that’s not everyone’s truth.
We have proud decent Ghanaians who wake up at 5am to make it the office at 8am and close around 6pm to make it home for 10pm each day—in search for money while maintaining their dignity as women.
And these women have every right to be upset about Moesha’s claim. However, it does not mean her claim is totally unfounded. She is not a lone wolf in this line of business, there are many more like her—some proud to talk about it and many hypocritical about it.
