Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has been Authorised by Ghana Government to stop charging VAT (Value Added Tax) from some 64 commodities with immediate effect of which Condom a.k.a “shin-guard” was listed.
On 21st March 2018 a meeting was held by the Economic Management Team led by His Excellency the Vice President of the Republic, Dr Mahamadu Bawumia.
A statement signed by the minister of Information, Mustapha Hamid disclosed, “This suspension is pending an assessment of Harmonized code (HS Code) for customs which were reviewed effective same date.”
Some of the 64 commodities for which tax has been suspended are Tractor for Agriculture, Musical Instruments, Solar Cells, Outboard Motors, Day-Old Chicks, Mobile Phones and Electronic Transformers.
The statement also said “the proposed fumigation levy’ for shippers be indefinitely suspended”
“Further details of affected products will be outlined by the Ghana Revenue Authority in due course. Government is grateful to all stakeholders for forthrightly participating in the engagement sessions and looks forward to a substantive resolution of the challenges faced by importers and shippers,” The Minister Concluded.
