Former COCOBOD CEO Stephen Opuni, Who Approved Lavish Contracts, Charged By AG's Office For Fraud, Money Laundering And Causing Financial Loss To The State

The attorney General’s department has levelled numerous charges against former head of COCOBOD, Dr Stephen Opuni, in a sweeping indictment.
The 27 charges, laid before an Accra High Court today March 14th, accuses the former administrator and a co-conspirator, Alhaji Seidu Agongo, of conspiring to cause financial loss to the state
Dr Opuni was a highly contentious public figure during his time in office, with numerous allegations of corruption hitting his COCOBOD administration. He was thrust into the limelight after the NDC lost the 2016 elections for allegedly greenlighting multi million cedi contracts when he only had weeks to leave office.
In court today, the allegations were concretized by the Attorney General as the charges were laid down on Opuni. They include money laundering, defrauding by false pretenses, violation of procurement laws and bribery.

“Mr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni between November 2014 and November 2015 in Accra in the Greater Accra Region, abeted Seidu Agongo and Agricult Ghana Limited to defraud Ghana COCOBOD  of the sum of Ghc 75, 289, 314.72.” portions of the suit reads.
“Stephen Kwabena Opuni on the 10th of October 2014 in Accra, agreed to permit your conduct as the Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD to be influenced with an amount of Twenty Five Thousand Ghana Cedis (Ghc25,000) from Seidu Agongo”.
