Veteran Ghanaian musician Gyedu Blay Ambolley has spoken out on what he thinks has caused the downfall of highlife music in Ghana.
According to Ambolley, the rise of dancehall which has taken over radio airplay has pushed highlife into the background.
He therefore place the blame on the demise of highlife squarely at the feet of the Ghanaian media.
“Radio stations have been part and parcel of our music not being played that much. Because for some few years now, most of the radio stations have been pumping every time, dancehall,” he told Naa Ashorkor.

Ambolley also argued that the curfews put in place during the PNDC era really affected the highlife scene which depended on late night events for its patronage.
