Many couples who get married are often eager to start giving birth as soon as possible but a gynaecologist is warning against that.
According to Dr Caroline Ladzekpo, an obstetrician/gynaecologist (OB/GYN) at the 37 Military Hospital, couples should wait at least six months after marriage before attempting to give birth.
The Dr said failure to do so could lead to a condition known as ‘preeclampsia’, which in certain cases can be fatal.
Speaking on Adom Fm, Dr Ladzekpo said when couples have s*x for the first few times, the woman’s reproductive system is still not used to the man’s sperm and that could lead to some damage, therefore couples who have never had s*x should hold off on conceiving when on honeymoon.
“It is advisable to wait for at least six months after marriage before conception; by then the body of the woman would have adjusted to the man’s sperm,” she said.

She added that “Preeclampsia is common among first time mothers who have not had s*xual intercourse with their husbands but get pregnant during honeymoon,”
According to the online encyclopedia Wikipedia, “Pre-eclampsia (PE) is a disorder of pregnancy characterized by the onset of high blood pressure and often a significant amount of protein in the urine. The condition begins after 20 weeks of pregnancy.”
Figures from the World Health Organization show that it is the leading cause of infant and maternity deaths worldwide, and is seven times more likely to affect a woman in the developing world than one in the developed world.
