President Nana Akufo-Addo Signs Special Prosecutor Bill Into Law

Nana Akufo Addo

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has signed into law the much talked about Special Prosecutor Bill.
The President signed the controversial bill, alongside four others, into law on the first day of work in 2018 — January 2nd.
The law sets up the office of the special prosecutor, whose mandate would be to investigate corruption charges against political appointees and private persons engaged in state level corruption.
The bill was passed by Parliament in November last year.
“My hope and expectation is that the establishment of this Office is going to be an important step in our collective determination to root out corruption from the public life of our country. All of us know that it has been a major bane in the development of Ghana.” Nana Akufo-Addo said after signing the new law.
“And hopefully this Office as it is intentioned, will make that contribution and make sure that public officials -past and present- are held to account to for their actions and that corrupt acts will no longer go without investigations…,”
The office has been praised by officials of the ruling party whilst those of the opposition decry it as a political tool meant to jail its former officials.
