North Hills International School, an ultra-modern school situated at North Legon in Accra has on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 donated items worth thousands of Ghana cedis and undisclosed amount of money to the Royal Seed Home at Kwao Bondze, a suburb in Kasoa in the Central Region.
The donation forms part of the school’s corporate social responsibility to give back to the needy and underprivileged in society. Items donated include toiletries, clothes, educational materials, shoes, bags of rice, soft drinks, washing powder, biscuits, cooking oil, cartons of tin tomato among others.
Miss Emma Coleman, Head teacher of North Hills International School said the school is committed to assisting the needy and less privileged in society to live a better life.
The group, together with authorities of the orphanage, toured and inspected the place.
Receiving the Items
Receiving the items on behalf of the orphanage, the caregiver of the home, Ms. Eva Agbesike, expressed joy and heartfelt gratitude for the kind donation made to the home at a time they needed it most. According to her, the donation would at least bring joy, hope, and love to the needy children.
Ms. Agbesike also lauded North Hills International School for its amiable gesture and hospitality and urged them to keep up the good work the school is doing for humanity. She assured the school’s administration that the items would be used to serve the needs of the orphanage.
“The gesture restores hope. We shall use the items well,” she said.
Speaking on challenges facing the home, Ms. Agbesike said the home does not have enough rooms to accommodate the children. She therefore used the opportunity to make a passionate appeal to all well-meaning Ghanaians, institutions, and corporate bodies to come to their aid.
According to her, the home wishes to construct a building on a new land acquired in order to offer proper sleeping place for the orphans; but coming across fund has been very difficult. She said the home, aside looking for benevolent individuals and institutions to fund the building project, is in urgent need of mattresses, mosquito nets, foodstuffs, bus to convey the children to school and for the home’s daily activities, generator etc.
Imparting the Culture of Giving
Ms Coleman, Head teacher of North Hills International School, said students of the school, aside academic work, are trained to be responsible citizens and one of the things they are taught to do is to assist the needy and the underprivileged in society.
According to her, actions speak louder than words and if your actions don’t live up to your words, then you have nothing to say so it was deemed right to set the pace for the pupils to emulate.
She further stated that the act was to also help the students appreciate the efforts of their parents in providing their needs for them.
Ms. Coleman said as an orphanage, the school’s donation was to show kindness and love for the orphans, as well as give them hope for the future.
Choice of Orphanage
The donation to an orphanage, according to Ms. Coleman, was something the school had planned at the beginning of the term to embark on.
Speaking on why Royal Seed Home became the focus, she said the school had initially decided to donate to any children’s home in Accra. However, they realized the aforementioned home was more deprived than the ones they came across in Accra, hence settled on that.
Narrating how they got to know the place, Ms. Coleman said a documentary that was aired on TV about the plight of the orphanage drew their attention to the place. A follow-up call was made and a delegation sent to assess the place.
According to her, “It is the tradition of North Hills International School to donate to the needy and less privileged in society annually.”
