The difference in how the powerful and the powerless are punished for their crimes could not be more pronounced than in this case.
We’ve read stories of people receiving harsh jail sentences for stealing goats, fowls or even amounts as small as Ghc 20 or 200 – yet becoming a public figure and embezzling sums far greater rarely leads to imprisonment.
Adom Fm’s Captain Smart reports on the case of an accountant at the Western regional branch of the Nursing and Midwifery Council who forged the Bank of Ghana stamp and used his fake stamp to embezzle up to Ghc 90m (that’s 900bn old cedis).
His punishment — he was made to pay the money back, with interest.
That solves everything then, doesn’t it? What a joke!
