The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has announced that allowances paid to chiefs and other traditional leaders in the country has been increased by 100% in fulfilment of an NPP campaign promise.
The President was speaking with the National House of Chiefs in Kumasi when he announced the new allowances.
“The allowances for chiefs and queen-mothers of the National Houses of Chiefs have been increased by 100 percent, and payments by government are up to date. As I speak, the fourth quarter allowances are being processed. Quarterly budget support to traditional councils and houses of chiefs have also been increased by merely 60 %.” the President said.
“I am aware that there are other issues of infrastructure and logistics which are all being addressed. The Chief of Staff and the Office of the President is working hard to resolve the problems of mobility that you have in this house so you can have the cars to do your work,” he added.
Traditional leaders who are members of the National House of Chiefs receive a monthly stipend from government to aid them carry out their duties as part of the cultural fabric of the country.
