CEO of Big Events Ghana and the brain behind the annual RTP awards, Prince Mackay, has responded to criticism of the scheme as lacking credibility.
The 2017 edition of the awards came off late Saturday and some Ghanaians were unhappy with some of those awarded, especially comedienne Afia Schwarzenegger.
Diamond Appiah called the awards a joke and social media was filled with some disgruntled people but according to Mackay, the RTP’s stand tall when it comes to credibility in awards schemes in Ghana.
“Every award scheme has its challenges but when it comes to credibility, RTP stands tall. There has been no issue of awardees paying bribes to win their awards and the scheme cannot be manipulated by any individual. RTP receives massive publicity every year because of the credibility it has obtained over the years” he told Showbiz in an interview.
According to Mackay, the awards are based on voting therefore those who complain their favourites did not win cannot blame them (RTP) since the public chooses the winners.
“How can the scheme be held responsible for whether or not a presenter wins an award. The award is based on voting so if your favourite presenter fails to pick up an award, the organisers should not be held responsible” he said.
Mackay also rubbished calls for him to hand over the award to a more ‘credible’ organization.
This year’s awards, aside the controversy on the night, was also bugged by logistical challenges including the vice President being billed without his consent and Patapaa pulling out due to low payment.
