Not a single movie was chosen – in a hilarious turn of events, none of the movies submitted by Ghanaian filmakers for consideration for the 2018 Academy Awards met the standard and were thrown out.
Local movie stakeholders, whether in Kumawood or Ghallywood, have complained constantly that their products are not patronized by Ghanaians due to foreign soap operas. What they often fail to admit is that their product does really suck.
And they had a chance to prove us all wrong when the chance was given for Ghana to submit a movie for the Oscars. However, no movie managed to even make it past the local office set up to screen entries.
And speaking on the issue, actor Adjetey Annan, ska ‘Pusher’, said this failure should ginger local filmmakers to realize they also have many issues which they have to solve.
“I think it’s pretty sad, especially when we have the opportunity to be able to take that up. It tells us that there are still things that we have to put together,” he said.
Annan added that some internal divisions also plague the industry, and also cited Ghanaians for not being willing to support our own as some of the issues.
“We (filmmakers) should seek advice, we should seek knowledge from people who have had experience so that we can always find ourselves ready for anything that comes up,” he added.
