Government To Implement Policy For Ghanaian Stations To Air 70% Local Content

Kumkum Bhagya

Looks like finally there would be some policy changes from government in response to the complaints of local actors and producers about the influx of foreign content taking over Ghanaian tv.
According to Communications Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekufful, a policy proposal is being drawn up which would compel Ghanaian stations to show at least 70% of Ghanaian content at prime time.
Kumawood, Ghallywood and every stakeholder in the Ghanaian movie industry have been complaining in recent times that foreign content is taking away all the support and sponsorship which would help them survive.
The worst culprits have been these soaps which have been translated into Akan and have exploded in popularity all across the country.
With petitions coming in all over, government is looking at a policy to help the local industries get on an even footing.
Speaking to a delegation from the Media General Group (owners of Tv3) when they paid a courtesy call on her, Ursula revealed that the policy is in the works and would soon be unveiled. It would mandate prime time content be at least 70% Ghanaian.
According to her, the new policy would help local fimmakers, producers and actors to get the chance to have their content be patronized more by Ghanaians.
