Once upon a time in Bethelhem, Mzbel was the raunchiest star this country had ever seen. She wore the shortest skirts and showed the most skin, and her performances was something else.
She also revelled in always being in controversy, which fuelled her notoriety and made her one of the most must see musicians in the country.
In recent times, Mzbel has talked a lot about those early days of her career and how that put a certain ‘stain’ on her which she has now moved from. But whilst Mzbel claims that phase destroyed her brand, she’s also saying that since she left that style, her career has taken a downturn.
Speaking on Master Richard’s ‘After Hours’ show on TV3, the ’16 Years’ singer addressed a slump in her career, attributing it to her change of style, such as not being as raunchy anymore. She said people now tag her as ‘boring’ as she’s not interested in doing what she used to do. That mantle have been taken over by new stars like Ebony.
“…I used to be very aggressive and provocative out there. I’ll wear anything; skimpy cloth, show skin but I’m not doing that anymore and even in my new songs the lyrics are different. I found that people have said to me that the new ‘Mzbel’ is boring so I don’t know if that is the reason why I’m not getting a lot of attention for my music,” the singer told Mikki Osei Berko.
Upon suggestions that her political affiliation to the NDC might be slowing down her career, Mzbel said she had no idea why her political leanings should be a problem.
“I don’t know how that is supposed to affect because I’m not even a politician… I supported a party and it’s done, we didn’t even win so I don’t know why you should hate me or not listen to my songs or promote my music because I supported somebody.” she said.
Politically, it would not be the first time a musician or actor has fallen on hard times after supporting a losing party in an election, although Mzbel’s situation is definitely more complicated than that.
She’s also quite contradictory, as she once claimed that being notorious soiled her brand and has now affected her career, but is now also arguing that turning away from notoriety has actually slowed down her career.
