Ghana Wins Maritime Dispute Against Cote d'Ivoire (Read Judgement)

The Special Chamber of the ITLOS

The International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) have ruled in favour of Ghana in the maritime dispute between us and Cote d’Ivoire over some offshore oil fields.
Cote d’Ivoire were laying claim to portions of Ghana’s newly discovered oil fields, and managed to procure an injunction to stop Ghana drilling in those fields for the duration of the dispute.
However, the final verdict was handed down today, Saturday September 23, and the tribunal ruled in favour of Ghana by a unanimous decision.
According to the judges, Ghana did not infringe on Cote d’Ivoire’s sovereignty in any way. They also ruled that we owed them no compensation for the use of the fields.
The ruling ends a three year process which started under the previous NDC government, with Ghana achieving a clear victory in the dispute.
