Looks like Ghanaians are so desperate to escape our own country. Statistics show that Ghana is the sixth highest nation to have visa applications to the United States rejected last year.
65.7% of all visa applications from Ghanaians in fiscal year 2016 – a full two out of three – were denied.
This came out in a report by the U.S State department, which showed Ghana with one the highest ‘bounce’ rates in the world.
Our plight is compounded when you look at the other countries with high bounce rates, mostly poverty stricken or war torn. Cuba tops, followed by Afghanistan, Mauritania, Liberia, Gambia, Bhutan, and then Kwame Nkrumah’s Ghana.
If Ghana is a middle income, peaceful country like we’re supposed to be, why are so many people desperate to escape?
The fact is that over half a century after Independence, not much has changed in Ghana. Most people live below the poverty line and there’s virtually no middle class due to high standard of living and low wages.
Another disgraceful statistic is that in 2015, 1.7m Ghanaians applied for the U.S Visa Lottery, representing 12% of the total applications. Tiny Ghana provided a whopping 12% of the Visa Lottery applications worldwide, the highest percentage provided by any one country.
