Teacher trainees in Ghana would from next month make Ghc 204 as allowance from the government, officializing a shift in policy from the previous government.
The Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) would make the payments every month to teacher trainees for a policy expected to cost government a total of Ghc 144m every academic year.
Trainee teachers allowances were scrapped by the Mahama administration in the 2013/14 academic year. Its restoration was a key campaign promise of the then NPP flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo.
According to the state owned Daily Graphic, each student would be entitled to Ghc 400 monthly. However, Ghc 196 would be given directly to the institution to cater for feeding and utility fees.
Despite the restoration of the allowances, the Ghc 204 figure represents a significant reduction from the Ghc 452 – post deduction – teacher trainees were making before the Mahama government completely scrapped the policy.
