Luis Fonsi’s ‘Despacito’, the Spanish language song which has virtually taken over the world, has equalled a long standing Billboard Hot 100 record set by the legendary Mariah Carey.
The single, which features Daddy Yankee and was remixed with Justin Bieber, has spent 16 straight weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, a record equalling feat.
The last song to enjoy a similar lengthy reign atop the chart was Mariah Carey’s ‘One Sweet Day’ which featured Boys II Men.
“This is a historic day for Latin music! I’m incredibly thankful for all of my fans and their amazing support. Feeling very blessed right now,” Fonsi said in a statement to the Associated Press on Monday.
‘Despacito’ has shattered many records during its time in the limelight – it has spent 30 weeks atop Billboards Hot Latin Chart and is also the first video to hit 3bn views on YouTube.
