Officials of the Electoral Commission raised Ghc 83,000 after they auctioned off some vehicles belonging to them, most of which were sold at prices far below market prices.
All cars sold were valued at around Ghc 402,328, yet the sales raised only Ghc 83,000 for the Commission.
One of the officials who purchased a car below market value was former chair Afari Gyan, who purchased a Nissan mini bus for Ghc 2,675 in 2013.
EC Chair Charlotte Osei was queried about these happenings by Parliament’s Public Account Committee. Speaking to the Committee Friday, Mrs Osei revealed that the vehicles were auctioned off after being used for six years by the Commission and that bidding was opened to both officials and the general public.
When asked to explain what might have caused the huge ‘discrepancy’ between the valuation of over Ghc 400,000 and the amount realised of Ghc 83,000, Mrs Osei had no explanation, instead saying that those who valued the vehicles were officials of the Commission who had little experience in valuing cars.
