Major Maxwell Mahama was killed by residents of Denkyira-Obuasi – where he was stationed as commanding officer of an anti-galamsey troop. The soldier was lynched by a mob, who supposedly mistook him for an armed robber.
In the wake of his death, a cabinet meeting was held to decide steps the nation would take to take care of his family in his absence, as the Major was married with two kids. The decisions taken that day included a state burial for the soldier and a Ghc 500,000 trust set up to aid his family.
