A Canadian baby has become the first in the world to not be given any gender at birth as the parents involved have decided they want no gender classification until the baby grows up and chooses one.
Thus after birth, Searyl Atli was marked as ‘U’ on the health card, which the parents say stands for ‘unassigned’ or ‘undetermined’.
The parents of the child consider themselves genderless, and say they want their baby to grow up and make their own decision.
“I’m recognising them as a baby and trying to give them all the love and support to be the most whole person that they can be outside of the restrictions that come with the boy box and the girl box.” Kori Doty, the baby’s mother, said.
Doty is fighting for the baby’s birth certificate not to include a male/female gender marker but a third option, although the British Columbia authorities have so far refused that request.
