Former Ghana President John Agyekum Kuffour has put an attack out on our first ever President, Kwame Nkrumah, accusing him of destroying Ghana’s democracy.
Kuffour, speaking to a delegation of the International Democratic Union (IDU), who paid a courtesy call on him Tuesday, said Nkrumah’s actions in taking Ghana to one party rule caused us problems which have existed till now.
“Our then President Nkrumah, left of centre politician, moved the country into a one-party state with a lot of intolerance; he built a whole prison just 22 miles of Accra for the detention of political opponents”. Kuffour told members of the delegation.
“Democracy as we are espousing was virtually killed…, by 1966 the country had had too much and it was labouring under poverty it had never known before”.
Kuffour added that in 1992, we were able to finally get back on our feet and our democracy has been deepening since then.
The IDU is an international coalition of over 80 Conservative, Christian Democrat and like-minded political parties of the centre and centre right. The NPP joined as a member during the reign of Kuffour.
