Francis Agyare, the man whose complaint to the Ghana Legal Council (GLC) led to the suspension of human rights lawyer Francis Xavier Sosu, has spoken out on why he filed a complaint against Sosu when the lawyer supposedly helped him win a case of wrongful imprisonment.

Speaking on the Joy Fm Super Morning Show Wednesday, Agyare debunked claims that Sosu helped him get out of prison.

He also revealed that after he was released, the Cape Coast Bar Association donated a sum of Ghc 1,907 to him for his ordeal, but Sosu took the money and only gave him Ghc 100 out of it.

Based on that, he filed a complaint against Sosu, which was upheld and led to part of his ban. Sosu has appealed the ban.

I appealed and got out of prison. Sosu didn’t help me to get out of prison. He didn’t do anything to help me get out of prison.

“Sosu said he would give me GHS150 a month and that he’d rent a place for me. He claimed he wanted to be a helping hand, so that when my compensation comes through, he would take his money back. He made me sign a document, but he never did what he said he’d do.

“I was invited to the Bar Association in Cape Coast to speak on the ills in the prison system and how I was treated. Sosu took me there and told them that he helped me to get out of jail. The lawyers in Cape Coast made a donation of GHS1,907. I handed the money to Sosu so I’d go and thank them and he refused to give it back to me. He told me that the donation was at his request, so the money was for him. He gave me only GHS100 out of that money and took the rest.

I went to report to the GLC that Sosu wanted to take my money and pay into his account. Sosu had told them that he had been feeding me and taking care of me. It wasn’t true.”
