Ivorian international midfielder Cheick Tiote has died after collapsing during training.
Tiote, a player for the Chinese club Beijing Enterprises, collapsed and could not be revived.
He was 30.
Tiote played for Newcastle United in the English Premier League for seven seasons, before moving to China earlier this year. His former clubs include FC Twente and Anderlecht.
“It is with deep sadness I confirm that Cheick Tiote sadly passed away earlier today after collapsing in training,” Beijing Enterprises spokesman Emanuele Palladino said.
“We cannot say any more at the moment and we request that his family’s privacy be respected at this difficult time. We ask for all your prayers.”
Tiote was part of the Ivorian squad which beat Ghana in the final of the 2015 African Cup of Nations to lift the trophy.
May he rest in peace.
