Prominent human right lawyer Francis Xavier Sosu has been banned from legal practice for three years.
The General Legal Council (GLC) found him guilty of ‘professional misconduct’, after a complaint was filed by a former client.
However, with Sosu being a former NDC Parliamentary primary aspirant, Ghanaians are already claiming the suspension was politically motivated.
Comments on social media show people theorising that the decision was made to neutralise Sosu.
“His ban is politically motivated and orchestrated by Nana Addo & his apparatchiks….he contested madina, Abokobi mp seat on the ticket of NDC in the last elections, abi?” one user wrote on Facebook.
“Lawyer Francis Xavier is set to dethrone Siddique Bonniface. I smell political mastermind” another wrote.
“He is a good lawyer and 3years ban is surely calculated to make him inactive in this npp era.” another one added.
With the suspension coming out of the blue, many cannot find any explanation but to go for the politically motivated route, especially with how prominent Xavier is in the media.
However, not everyone is buying the political motive.
“Is Nana Addo the president of the Ghana Bar Association? Or chairman of Ghana Legal Council? There is a problem with a case he handled and the GLC have decided to suspend him an a certain set of facts. All he has to do now is to appeal and set it aside. I don’t think we should be drawing political red herrings into it.” one user indignantly hit back.
“Did he break the ethics code? That should settle the matter…” another wrote.
Sosu, for his part, has confirmed his suspension to Citi Fm, but promised to appeal the ban.
