The NDC government ordered a fleet of cars a mere one week to leaving office.
Whether out of habit or not we’ll never know, but an order for 43 specially fitted vehicles worth in excess of $9m was approved by then President John Dramanai Mahama, on the 30th of December 2016 – over three weeks after losing election and only a week before handing over.
Documents sighted by Joy News show the purchase was authorised for the vehicles, which were to be used by the President, his Vice, the first Lady and others.
The vehicles are the sort of armoured luxury cars usually seen carrying dignitaries around in movies.
“The cars are capable of firing rounds of ammunition and are designed to withstand the effects of a hand grenade.” Joy reports.
“All four sides of the passenger compartment and the roof of the vehicle are protected using high-quality armour steel and glass defeating a NATO ball ammunition,”
The vehicles were supposed to be delivered within 40 days but are still stuck in Dubai – as President Nana Akufo-Addo has put a freeze on purchases of new vehicles for the operations of the Presidency and the Ministries.
