Amnesty International Ghana: Respect the Human Rights of Captain Mahama’s Suspected Killers

Amnesty International

Ghana’s branch of Amnesty International has called for justice for the suspected killers of Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama–the soldier who was lynched by residents of Denkyiri-Obuasi in the Central Region.

Amnesty International Ghana has said though the killing of Captain Mahama is barbaric, security agencies should not abuse the human rights of those arrested since they remain innocent for now.

“Our laws are clear; identify the culprits involved in this unfortunate development, they must be questioned and interrogated. But in the process of investigation, it should be done with due diligence” said Lawrence Amesu, Director of Amnesty International Ghana.

He added; “The laws are clear on issues of presumption of innocence. The accused persons must be deemed innocent until proven guilty by court of competent jurisdiction.”

Lawrence Amesu spoke on Kumasi-based Ultimate FM and also advised the military high command to leave the investigations to Ghana Police Service to ensure fairness.

“As human rights organisation, we are much devastated about the increasing spate of lawlessness in the country. And we all need to do something urgently to curb it. We will like to express our sincere condolences to the bereaved family, also to the Ghana Armed Forces for the loss of a precious one,” he stated.
