Delta Force ‘Court Break’ Escapees Pardoned – Face Nothing But Fines And Probation

Ghana is a beautiful country. Petty theft can land the perpetrator in jail for years on end, but large scale looting of the public purse usually goes unpunished.

Seems we can add forcibly escaping from custody, whilst in a courtroom, and placing a judge at risk of assault, to the list of things aren’t bad enough to get you imprisoned in Ghana.

A few days ago, Ghanaians were shocked when members of the NPP affiliated vigilante group the Delta Force stormed a High Court in Kumasi and freed 13 members of theirs arrested for attacking the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council.

The shocking attack occurred despite the presence of police at the facility, and the trial judge was reportedly nearly assaulted in the melee.

The escaped 13 voluntarily surrendered to police the next day, and they were brought up on charges of resisting arrest for their daring court escape.

But they were pardoned on those charges after their lawyer pleaded that since they were first time offenders, they were oblivious to the consequences of their actions.

The judge apparently bought that and sentenced them to a fine of Ghc 2,400 each and a bond to be of good behaviour for six months. If they commit any crime within the bond period, they get an automatic three year sentence.

The substantive case against the accused, for the attack on the Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, resumes April 20.
