Former President John Dramani Mahama has waded into the founder’s controversy currently raging in Ghana and he’s squarely on the side of Dr Nkrumah.

A huge debate has sprung up over whether it makes sense to declare Kwame Nkrumah the founder of Ghana or whether others who contributed to the struggle also should be labelled as such.

Speaking at a book reading of his autobiography ‘My First Coup D’etat’ at the University of Ghana Tuesday, the former President said inasmuch as Jesus Christ is seen as the founder of Christianity, Kwame Nkrumah can also be described as the founder of Ghana.

“Certainly, one thing we can’t run away from is that, he [Nkrumah] is the founder of our nation. He led the independence struggle. Many people contributed and it happens; in Christianity, there is John the Baptist, there are all the apostles, but who is the champion of Christianity, Jesus Christ,” he said.

Mahama emphasised that his comments weren’t to downplay the role of others but that every one had their role to play in the struggle but some get more recognition.

“We don’t undermine the role other people played… but you cannot recognise all those who took part. There is that person who gave the critical spark that eventually led to independence. And you cannot run away from the fact that it is Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.”
