The UK government has written a letter to the European Union which triggers article 50, the portion of the the Lisbon treaty which gives every EU member nation the right to exit the Union at any time.
The letter is the beginning of a two year process of negotiations which would end with the UK exiting the continental body, in accordance with last year’s infamous Brexit vote.
The letter was signed by Prime Minister Theresa May and was addressed to the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk.
