Otiko Djaba Attracts Ire Of Ghanaians After Telling SHS Students Wearing Short Dresses Attracts Rapists

The Minister of Gender and Social Protection, Otiko Afisa Djaba, is in the cross-hairs of Ghanaian social media after she told SHS students that they might be responsible for getting raped if they wear short skirts.

In a dramatic shift from even a few years ago, it seems Ghanaian society is shifting just a little to the left on the ideological spectrum as Otiko has drawn condemnation instead of the indifference or even praise members of a deeply patriarchal society would have showered on her.

Otiko Djaba, speaking to students of Krobo Girls Presbyterian Senior High School during their 90th anniversary and Speech and prize giving day, said girls are responsible for their dressing as they could attract rapists with short skirts.

“…I want to say to you, be bold, be confident, be respectful. If you wear a short dress, it’s fashionable but, know that it can attract somebody who would want to rape or defile you. You must be responsible for the choices you make,” she said.

The words and the implication, that women are responsible for rape, has drawn significant condemnation.
