The Kintampo Waterfalls in the Brong Ahafo regions, one of the nation’s premiere tourist destinations, has been closed down indefinitely.
The decision has been taken in the wake of the recent disaster which led to the deaths of nearly two dozen people and left many others injured.
The acting Brong Ahafo Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Sampson Gbande, confirmed the decision to the Daily Graphic, revealing the measure was put in place by the Kintampo Municipal Security Council following the incident.
19 died and many others sustained injury in Sunday’s incident, which occurred after trees fell off the top of the waterfall and crushed those swimming in the water below.
Government has announced safety checks would be carried out at numerous tourist destinations across the country. It’s currently unknown when the waterfalls would be opened back up for tourists.
