Foreign soap operas (telenovelas) have been blamed for many ills in Ghana – creating unrealistic expectation of what relationships should look like, destroying the local movie industry, and many others – but as far as we know no one has suggested they are the causes of divorces just yet.
In steps Kumawood actress Christiana Awuni, who claims that the shows, in addition to strangling Kumawood, have led to more divorces in the country.

Speaking on Accra Fm, Awuni said this occurs when women obsessed with such shows are unable cook for their husbands, thus leading to the men eventually divorcing them.
“Women are addicted to it (foreign soaps) and instead of cooking for their husbands, they don’t, which has led to many divorces.” she said.
“I will support government to place an embargo on them. Their culture is not our culture and they are destroying our work as movie makers.”
In an earlier part of the interview, the actress said local stations also are contributing to the decline of Kumawood, by paying to bring those shows into the country and neglecting the local movies.

She said this shows a lack of pride in our own works.
“Which Indian will come and purchase a Ghanaian movie and take it back to India and translate it into Hindi?” she wondered. “It won’t happen.”
“So this means we do not even respect ourselves because it means we value their movies and telenovelas more than we do ours. That is why we spend money to bring those movies into the country to destroy our movie industry,”
