Chief Executive Officer of the Mental Health Authority, Dr. Akwasi Osei seems to have a solution to the increasing suicide cases in Ghana.
Dr, Osei is a known Mental Health expert and advocate who on several accounts petitioned Government to prioritize mental health issues far before these recent suicide cases.
A first-year student in Knust and daughter of MP took her life allegedly over failing exams cum relationship issues. Days after a Final Year Legon Student purportedly jumped from her fourth-floor room’s balcony and landed dead, a situation many believed it was a suicidal attempt over a cheating boyfriend and ill mental health.
Dr. Akwasi Osei said the key underlying factor that is pushing people to take their own lives is the hardship they are facing which is out of Ghana’s deteriorating economy.
Speaking to Gifty Andoh-Appiah on JOYNEWS channel, Dr. Osei said the government has to do all it can to fix the economy which will eventually curb the suicide cases.
“If the economy is not booming and people are having hardship you will have this [suicide] happening.” the C.E.O of the Mental Health Authority said.
The latest suicide was reported in Old Achimota on Thursday where a lifeless body of a man believed to be in his mid-twenties was found hanging on a tree.
