The finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, presented the 2017 budget statement to Parliament earlier today (Thursday, March 2).
The budget, the first under the Nana Akufo-Addo administration, has been dubbed the ‘Asempa’ budget by supporters and is aimed at cutting taxation and unleashing economic growth.
“We will eliminate nuisance taxes and provide tax incentives to the private sector to spur growth. The tax base will be broadened by formalising the economy through the national identification card system and the national address system, among others. We believe that these initiatives will maximise revenue collection while rationalising expenditures.” Mr Ofori-Atta said.
He also pledged that some of the President’s signature campaign promises, such as one district one factory, free shs, establishment of the Zongo Development Fund and restoration of the teaching and nursing training allowances, would all be implemented under government’s financial plan.
