Ghanaian Starts Petition To Get Government To Ban The Use Of Plastic In The Country

The issue of the use of plastic has been debated ad nauseam in this country, although no concrete steps ever seems to come out of such ‘discussions’.

Plastic is a huge contributor to the ‘waste epidemic’ plaguing the country and one Ghanaian has decided to take matters into his own hands and call for a ban on it.

Yasmeen Helwani has started a change.org petition calling for a ban on plastic bags in the country. Aimed at being delivered to the President and Parliament, the petition notes the role plastic plays in a filthy Ghana and calls for a transition to more environmentally friendly alternatives.

The petition reads…

The problem of plastic bags in Ghana is obvious on the streets of our cities,  in our drains and in our oceans. Choking and killing everything. We are standing up together as Ghanaians to speak out and call for the ban of plastic bags in Ghana. Use paper bags or reusable shopping bags. Let’s make a safer environment for ourselves and our children. The time to act is now.

In many countries, governnments have put mechanisms in place on how to respond to such petitions, once they reach a certain threshold of signatures. In Ghana, I’ve seen many of such petitions and still aren’t quite sure how government or the relevant agency responds.

Helwani currently has over 1,100 signatories to his petition. You can sign here…
