“Koobi” a salted dried fish used to prepare Ghanaian delicacies and also known for its breathtaking aroma that brings joy to one’s home, takes a U-Turn to cause a fuse between its sellers/mongers and government.
Renowned heart surgeon, Professor Frimpong Boateng who is now Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation has alarmed how hazardous “koobi” has become and its sellers are worried his claim is ruining their business.
According to the Professor, the Koobi we know is not the Koobi we have today because fish mongers are using Formalin to preserve it than salt. He explained that formalin is a chemical used at the morgue to preserve corpse and the mongers have unfortunately resorted to that means to preserve the koobi despite the threatening health risk it poses such as cancer. The Minister detailed that, even flies that love and chase the Koobi we know do not get near the present day Koobi because of the Formalin chemical being used.

GhOneTv news followed up the news to a Koobi market in Adabraka only for the sellers to debunk they use formalin. One market woman who sells Koobi, passionately and sternly appealed to the government to come to their aid to rebut the false alarm as it is collapsing their business. She strongly stated that if the government pays deaf ears to their call, they will march onto the streets naked to demonstrate in a manner that won’t be a good luck to the government.
Government has not responded yet but do you have any way we can help these sellers or verify if they truly use formalin in preserving the Koobi. Share with us.
