The issue of gay rights is one that inflames passions among Ghanaians to quite an insane level. Both religiously and culturally, Ghanaians have been conditioned to hate the homos*xual with every fibre of their being.
Some of that hate can be stripped away with education and enlightenment, but even for a lot of Ghanaians those two can never change their minds from the attitudes ingrained in them since childhood.
The arguments against gay rights are never particularly intellectual propositions. For some it grosses them out, for others it’s not natural. But most condemn it on religious grounds – God frowns against it.
The Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Ocquaye, recently used the God argument in calling for homos*xuality to be criminalised in Ghana.

Leaving aside the obvious hypocrisy – Christians do a lot of things God frowns upon, that’s why they seek forgiveness every Sunday – the fact your God frowns on something is not a reason why everyone in the country should not be allowed to do that thing,
You’re a Christian, God does not want YOU to become gay. No problem, don’t become gay. If someone else wants to become gay, that’s their issue. If someones want to be a Christian and gay, that’s their issue as well. Afterall, the bible bans pork but some Christians eat it, some do not, and nobody dies.
The most important point is that your religious belief cannot dictate law for everyone. In secular society, secular reasons must be given for enacting legislation.
GhanaCelebrities.Com writer Godwin Nii-Armah Okine illustrated this perfectly with a post on Facebook. Noting that if you substitute gay rights with alcohol, or anything else the religious do not like – an argument can be made that said activity should be banned based on the sentiment of the religious.
If we want to criminalise being gay in this country based on Christianity – we can follow it up with banning everything the God of the bible does do not like.
Alcohol, like I said – pork, divorce, adultery – let’s criminalise all of those. Let’s be consistent and not hypocrites.

I’m a teetotaler, never touched a drink in my life. My religion tells me it is wrong and all those who drink would go to hell.
I therefore call on the government of Ghana to ban alcohol in the country. Allowing people to drink makes Ghana a godless nation and at risk of suffering the wrath of God. Therefore, we must pass laws prohibiting ANYONE from drinking alcohol.
Because I don’t like alcohol, even those who like it should not be allowed to drink it.
Hey Christians, that’s how batshit you sound when you argue against other people (OTHER PEOPLE. NOT YOU) being gay.
