VGMA artist of the year EL has chastised Ghanaians for helping kill off the genre of Azonto.
According to the BBNZ Live act, we had no idea how powerful the genre could be in projecting Ghana to the outside world, and thus with its death, we have lost a massive opportunity.
“I think Ghanaians actually killed Azonto. Ghanaians killed Azonto because we didn’t know how powerful it was.” He told OkayAfrica.com.
According to EL, Azonto actually projected Ghana on the global stage in a short stage much more than hiplife, highlife, or other indigenous genres had been able to do.
“Ghanaians had no idea. Azonto is a sound journal that has gone the furthest. Talk about highlife, talk about hip-life, Azonto music went the furthest in terms of music from Ghana,” He continued.
He added: “But, in my opinion, Ghana has destroyed it. Ghanaians didn’t give it the attention it deserved and Ghanaians shut it down. So, it’s basically non-existent, virtually non-existent right now. People do it, but it’s not given as much attention as it previously used to in its prime. It’s still there but it’s not as powerful as it used to be.”

EL is actually credited with being a huge part of the ‘Azonto’ revolution, which took Ghana, the rest of the continent and some parts of the world by storm. With Sarkodie, they composed the ‘You Go Kill Me’ single which played a huge role in popularising the style.
