One man, one wife, is the mantra most societies operate on – except for few exceptions like Muslim societies, who believe Allah permits them to keep up to four/five wives.

Monogamy has its challenges, especially when you consider that a lot of people cheat on their partners whether they are married or in a relationship that’s supposed to be exclusive. And this cuts across gender lines.

That really raises a lot of questions about whether humans are wired to be monogamous or it’s a social limitation we’ve placed on ourselves, and actress Scarlett Johannson believes it’s the latter.

In an interview with Playboy magazine, the ‘Lucy’ actress said she does not believe monogamy is natural to humans.

“I think the idea of marriage is very romantic; it’s a beautiful idea, and the practice of it can be a very beautiful thing,” she said, BUT…“I don’t think it’s natural to be a monogamous person.”

Johansson recently split with Romain Dauriac, her husband of just over two years, in January – and like most Hollywood stars, it’s not her first divorce.

Realistically, looking at divorce rates globally and how cheating seems to be so rampant, it’s difficult to disagree with Johannson’s assessment.
