President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has revealed that the ‘modest’ Ghana @ 60 celebrations he called for would cost Ghc 20m.
The President made the revelation during a ceremony to launch the logo and unveil planned activities for the upcoming celebrations.
“My ambition is to commemorate this anniversary with a minimum or no burden at all on the national treasury,” the President said, before adding that the cost should not exceed Ghc 20m.
The President, though, added that the cost of the celebration would be covered by raising funds from individuals and the private sector.
The cost of the celebration is not amusing to many Ghanaians, who do not understand why we need to spend so much to commemorate our own failures, especially on the back of the scandalous Ghana @ 50 celebrations under the Kuffour administration.
Tanzania’s President Magufuli famously cancelled that nation’s Independence day celebrations, turning the day into one large clean-up exercise – he said it was wrong to waste all that money when people are living in filth – he said it all.
