An overworked and undoubtedly underpaid State Attorney collapsed just before reaching the court she was supposed to prosecute a case in.
Rebecca Aryitey–Smith reportedly walked the roughly 500m (half a kilometre) distance between the Attorney General’s department to the New Court Complex, possibly leading to exhaustion which caused her collapse.
She took the walk because the bus that usually conveys them was unavailable for the day, a regular occurrence – and on such days those with court appearances either drive themselves (those with cars), walk the distance or pick a taxi.
But Aryitey-Smith decided to make the walk that day and upon reaching the court complex, had to climb three floors to get to the Criminal High Court. She reportedly collapsed just before reaching the entrance to the court.
Some lawyers around went to her aid, with some using their case files to fan her. Luckily, the new complex has a clinic and medical team on standby and they soon arrived and carted her to the ground floor for treatment.
The trial judge adjourned the case she was supposed to appear in due to her condition.
